A meteorite exploded in Russia’s Ural Region injuring hundreds of people. The videos below show the bright flare of the meteorite and the loud explosions it caused as it broke up. Windows shattered, alarms sounded and people raced for safety.
“I was driving to work, it was quite dark, but it suddenly became as bright as if it was day,” Viktor Prokofiev, a 36-year-old resident of Yekaterinburg in the Ural Mountains, told the Guardian reporters.
In 1908 a meteorite is thought to have devastated an area of more than 2,000sq km (1,250 miles) in Siberia in what became known as the Tunguska event.
