A film about the origin of a religion with a fairly obvious jibe at Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard. Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) is a naval war vet. He is a substance abuser, a boozer, a public masturbator and a general menace. He cannot tell whether he is a mental. But luckily for him Lancaster Dodd (Phillip Seymour Hoffman – one of the greatest actors ever lived) comes to his “rescue” with some religious salvation. It is set to be an intelligent film with lucid observations about the hysteria of religion.
